Though not totally valid statistically, the following survey gives some insight into the on-line habits and interests of people who have come in contact with the Western Fairs Association's web site, "Fairs Net."
This survey, as well as a considerable amount of positive feedback and support from fair industry officials on the West Coast of the U.S., is the main reason "The Fair InfoNet" is making the transition from Bulletin Board System (BBS) to the Internet's World Wide Web.

| Response Totals | ||
| Total | Pct. | |
| Surveys mailed | 154 | |
| Valid Addresses | 133 | 100.00% |
| Responses Received | 40 | 30.08% |
| No Response | 93 | 69.92% |
| A response rate of better than 30% was actually quite good considering that some of the e-mail addresses were more than a year old, and many people may check their e-mail infrequently. The holidays may also have an impact on the response rate. | ||
| 1) On average, how frequently is your e-mail checked? | ||
| Total | Pct. | |
| Less than once per week | 1 | 2.50% |
| 1-3 times per week | 7 | 17.50% |
| 4-6 times per week | 11 | 27.50% |
| Daily | 15 | 37.50% |
| 2-3 times per day | 2 | 5.00% |
| More than 3 times per day | 2 | 5.00% |
| Constantly | 2 | 5.00% |
| TOTAL | 40 | 100.00% |
| The striking statistic here is that 80% of all respondents check their e-mail at least four times per week. More than half check their mail at least daily. | ||
| 2) Please rate the following possible list topics in order of their importance to you (1 = most important, 10 = least important): | ||
| Avg. | ||
| Marketing, Publicity & Advertising | 3.36 | |
| Sponsorships & Promotions | 4.03 | |
| Entertainment | 4.26 | |
| Exhibits | 4.69 | |
| Management Issues | 4.69 | |
| Budgeting & Financial Issues | 4.79 | |
| Carnivals | 6.90 | |
| Maintenance | 7.00 | |
| Food and Beverage | 7.08 | |
| Livestock | 7.18 | |
| AVERAGE | 5.40 | |
| Not surprisingly, Marketing, Publicity & Advertising and Sponsorships & Promotions were the areas cited as being most important. Our hunch is that if we had polled for occupation, a high percentage of respondents would be found to hold jobs in fair publicity and promotions, areas with strong ties to the Internet. | ||
| 3) Based on what you've heard so far, how would you rate your interest in a fair industry list server? | ||
| Total | Pct. | |
| Definitely Interested | 19 | 47.50% |
| Somewhat Interested | 17 | 42.50% |
| Not Sure | 2 | 5.00% |
| Probably Not Interested | 2 | 5.00% |
| Definitely Not Interested | 0 | 0.00% |
| TOTAL | 40 | 100.00% |
| There are only a few factors which can explain why 90% of respondents expressed an interest in this service: 1) they did so based on past experience with other listservers and the knowledge of what they can do to foster an exchange of ideas, 2) the concept of a world-wide exchange of ideas related to fairs has broad appeal, or 3) any effort which has the potential to link fair people together is attractive to the majority. | ||
| 4) If a sponsor could not be found, and this list proved valuable to you, what do you feel would be a fair monthly subscription? | ||
| Total | Pct. | |
| I would not be able to pay a subscription | 7 | 17.50% |
| I would not be willing to pay a subscription | 9 | 22.50% |
| I would be willing to pay $5 per month | 16 | 40.00% |
| I would be willing to pay more than $5 per month | 4 | 10.00% |
| No response | 4 | 10.00% |
| TOTAL | 40 | 100.00% |
| It is still the intent to locate fairs, agencies, organizations and individuals to sponsor The Fair InfoNet. This would allow us to offer an unlimited number of free subscriptions. The high level of interest in the listserver alone would seem to indicate a strong potential sponsorship base. But it is gratifying to note that half of the respondents said they would pay at least $5/month if the listserver proved valuable. | ||
| 5) Do you have any questions, comments, or suggestions? | ||

I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE "BULLETIN BOARD" SYSTEM. PROVIDING A FORUM
OR NEWS GROUP FOR THE DISCUSSION OF FAIR RELATED TOPICS COULD BE OF GREAT INTEREST. AGFA SPONSORS NEWS GROUPS ABOUT THEIR PRODUCTS, ETC. BUT DOES NOT SEND THESE MESSAGES ON THE NET. YOU HAVE TO LINK INTO THEIR SITE AND ACCESS THEIR NEWS SERVER. THIS IS THE TYPE OF PRODUCT THAT I BELIEVE WOULD BE USEFUL TO THE FAIR INDUSTRY IN GENERAL. ***** It sounds interesting, but cost would probably keep me out. ***** Yours in an interesting idea as it would be great to share ideas between interested people but only as long as we had some common ground between us - ours is a one day fair that attracts 30,000 people to a rural site 90 km outside Australia's second largest city. We are a fund raising effort for for local community groups esp the local 100 student school. If this was a common profile and we had things to share I'm sure that a cost of around $50 a year would be responsible but the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Good luck ***** As you may guess from my position, my only interest in fairs is attending them, (mainly for the amusements). Therefore, I don't feel subscribing to the list would serve me any purpose, other than as a possible method to secure information for our website from a wide variety of other sites all in one go. ***** I will look forward to further progress and the results of results of your questionnaire! ***** Seems like a wonderful idea. Please keep us posted on your progress in developing a list server. ***** I am very interesting for common education programmes for showmen in USA. We have a lot of education programmes in Europe and want to share our experiences with USA partners. In between we also have good contact in Australia about educational prorammes. ***** I know the fair industry would be very interested in our musical show for children & families. However, with the time demands of handling all aspects of the group, I need a cost & time effective way to let people know about us. Thanks!! Good luck! ***** I BELIVE THAT MANY VENDOWS AND CARNIVALS WOULD HELP (with costs) HOW MANY VISITORS DO YOU HAVE A MONTH?? OUR LOCAL FAIRS SEEM TO HESITATE TO SHARE INFO, PORBLEMS, SUCCESSES, ECT. IT SEEMS THEY ARE IN COMPETITION. I WOULD REALLY LIKE FAIRS TO SHARE TEHESE ISSUES TO HELP PROMPTO THE INDUSTRY. ***** Dave - I think the key would be if the service were results oriented. Success breeds success. Would this be a compliment to a web page or in conflict? ***** I'm relatively sure that most of the other people on the list will be relatively happy to hear from me, just as I would be to hear from most of them. (So maybe you should consider renting or selling the list to pay for the list server? :-) ***** LET'S GET IT DONE!!! WILL BE A HUGE BOON TO COMMUNICATION, PROBLEM SOLVING, RESEARCH ISSUES, ETC IT'S SUCH A GREAT TOOL (the BBS), AND AM HAPPY TO SEE THAT ITS INTENT AND CAPACITY FOR INFORMATION SHARING COULD BE RETAINED AND MADE AVAILABLE TO MANY MORE PEOPLE ***** I really love fairs and amusement parks, so I am glad I could help out!! ***** Dave, sounds like a good idea and a great use of the technology. ***** I'm new on the computers, confused and lack the time to explore all the options of my system and the internet. How about a hands-on workshop on how to use all this technology??? (No more manuals, please...) ***** Our county fair is only 6 years old. We are small and are still learning a great deal and money is very tight. Any networking of ideas and wisdom would be greatly welcomed by us. ***** The fair association perhaps would be able to pay a subscription fee in the future ... we would want to see if and how this would benefit us first. I have confidence that it would help, however. Please keep me up to date. ***** Thanks for your enthusiasm. ***** Dave, It (what we would pay) would depend on who participated. ***** All of these (areas of interest) are important and it is difficult to rate them in order of importance. This is my order of importance today, but depending on where we are in our fair cycle, the order will change. Great idea, Dave. The industry needs an easy way to share information regarding ideas, innovations, products, services, etc. The more reason we have to use email and online services the more likely we are to begin to use these tools more effectively. ***** Can't it be free? |
